I hold a record that I'm very proud of. Err...I held a record that is. In all the years of toting a cell phone I've never broken, smashed, flushed or lost one. Everyone I know has run to the store for a replacement when something goes haywire or the phone gets mysteriously dropped into a fish tank. Mine have always endured until my contract allows for a new one at which time the old phone goes into a drawer someplace to gather dust. Until the other day...
I was rushing to print out some document when my printer ink cartridge ran out. I installed a new one to discover it was defective, leaving only smeary half-tone streaks across the paper.
Later that same day, Ed was returning home from work and was involved in a four-car pile-up, sending a potentially drunk driver to the hospital on a stretcher. He left four severely mangled cars and deployed airbags in his wake. Most thankfully, Ed walked away with just a headache and trash bags holding the remains of his car.
But it gets worse folks. So much worse.
Or I should say this is how my highly prized chocolate almond biscotti came out the other day! This is the exact recipe and technique that I used last year during the holidays. I probably made about 30 lbs of the stuff and every batch came out beautifully.
I started wondering why everything in my life was suddenly crumbling (literally) all around me. I began to wonder if Homeland Security agents had targeted me as a terrorist and were implementing new strategies to drive me from the country.
Someone casually commented on all of the above by saying, "You know why this happened, don't you?" I stared with incredulous eyes, wondering what insight into my life she held. She continued by saying, "Mercury is in retrograde!"
I don't think Mercury had much to do with any of this. I do think perhaps the mercury in my oven's thermometer has gone bezerk.

OH ED! Poor thing...
And darling, never underestimate the power of Mecury...
I'm so sorry about the biscotti and cell phone, but happy that Ed is OK.
And I'm a firm believer that the "Mercury is in retrograde" line is bullshit.
I'm so glad Ed is OK--four-car pile-ups can be scary stuff. And I don't believe in that Mercury stuff either, but that said, most of my electronic devices and communications have gone haywire the past week as well. Hmmmm...
Personally, I think the culinary-Gods are still in shock that you mixed strawberries with shrimp.
It may be a while before you're completely forgiven...
Holy cow! I'm sorry to hear that Ed was in an accident. But I don't think the cell phone or biscotti calamities have anything to do with Mercury. It's simply Pluto trying to get back at us for being downgraded from a planet to an asteroid.
woah. that is the prizewinner for a crappy week. so sorry! and so thankful ed walked away...ok? with his car in trashbags? i guess you could call that ok....
and a phone can be replaced, right? and new ink purchased?
but i must say, crumbly biscotti is a travesty.
Sorry about all of your mishaps. But you inspired me to make the biscotti (including the cinnamon). They are delicious. I really like the deep chocolate character to them. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I'm writing it up on my blog - will probably post it in a day or two (giving you all the credit, along with Epicurious).
how awful...but very happy to hear that Ed is OK!
Holy crap, what a series of mishaps! Hope Mercury changes course soon.
And a four care pile-up? That's just scary. I'm glad he's alright.
Sorry about the bad week :( I swear I have heard "Mercury is in retrograde" so many times that I suspect Mercury s ALWAYS in retrograde.
I apologize for my lack of blog reading of late.. not that you really care, maybe I'm apologizing to myself as I have missed you!
I'm sad to hear about Ed's car, but happy that he walked away virtually unharmed.
I had some of your biscotti last year and it was FABULOUS! I hope you do not let one crumbly batch disuade you from making another 29 pounds of it! ;)
So what did happen to your phone? It looks like it was run over by a tow-motor.
xoxo
